As we get closer to Bedlington station opening on Sunday 29th March 2026, we're taking a look back at the old station and sharing some images from the new look station.
The original station opened on the 3rd August 1850 and only had a fairly limited service to Newcastle, with a timetable from 1863 showing a timetable of 4 trains per day in each direction and a journey time of around 90 minutes. When the station re-opens, trains will run every 30 minutes during the day on Mondays to Saturdays, with an hourly service in the later evenings and on Sundays.
The station was one of the busiest on the line, with over 227,000 tickets sold in 1911, with that number dropping down to just under 53,000 journeys in 1951 and when the line closed in 1964, it was anticipated that the station had between 100 and 120 regular passengers.
The original station had one through platform that served trains to Morpeth and Newcastle with a second bay platform for trains to Newbiggin via Ashington. When the station closed in October 1964, only the one platform was in use for trains to Newbiggin, Blyth and Newcastle.
The new station opens on Sunday 29th March 2026 and will have foot and cycle access from the new Active Travel Corridor as well as having bus stops outside the station which provide regular links from Bedlington town centre, Nedderton, Stakeford & Cambois.
