We will be undertaking works in Bedlington to upgrade the roads and footpaths around Bedlington Station from Monday 21 July 2025. These works have been scheduled to take place during the school summer holidays to minimise local disruption.
These works will take place in phases. The first confirmed phase will start on Monday 21 July 2025 and will require Bedlington South Level Crossing to be closed to road traffic. We will be undertaking works on Station Road, to the west of Bedlington South Level Crossing, to remove the existing footpath surface, install kerbs and tactile pavement sections, install a traffic island, and resurface the footpath. In addition, there will also be lane closures and temporary traffic lights on the junctions of Ravensworth Street, Palace Road and Clayton Street, to allow for the installation of dropped kerbs and tactile paving at crossing points.
During the road closure, a diversion route for vehicles will be clearly sign posted and local bus services will be on a diversion.
Bus Diversions
Service X21 - will divert via Palace Road, St John's Road, A1147, B1331 & Melrose/Jubilee Terrace (and vice versa) and will not miss any stops.
Service 2 (until end of service on Wed 23rd July) - will divert via the B1331 to Stead Lane and won't serve St John's Road, Palace Road or Melrose & Jubilee Villas.
Service 2 (from Thu 24th July) - will divert via the B1331 to Stead Lane then run via Rothesay Terrace and Station Road to resume its usual route at Melrose/Jubilee Villas (and vice versa). The stops on St John's Road and Palace road won't be served.
Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout, although some short diversions will be required where works are taking place.
We will share any information about subsequent phases as the detail of these is confirmed. Please note though that the scope and duration of these highway works may change at short notice and can be impacted by the location and condition of any buried services encountered.

What to expect during the works
The teams will be on site 24 hours a day and during this work there is potential for noise and vibration, and delays to your journey. We will aim to keep disruption as minimal as practically possible and within the terms agreed with Northumberland County Council. We have continuous noise monitoring equipment installed onsite to capture in real-time the noise levels being generated as well as handheld noise monitoring equipment to record noise levels per shift.
