The next phase of highway improvement works at Bedlington Station from Saturday 9 August 2025.
These works have been scheduled to take place during the school summer holidays to minimise local disruption.
From Saturday 9 August 2025, works will continue on Ravensworth Street/ Station Street to complete essential drainage upgrades. This will require a full road closure from Clayton Street to Barrington Road (illustrated on the below map in blue). This work is anticipated to take 10 days to complete.
During the road closure, a diversion route for vehicles will be clearly signposted. Local bus services will be on a diversion, with a shuttle bus serving stops on Stakeford Road to provide a link to the Clayton Arms stop. The timetable for the shuttle bus is shown below and the bus diversions are as follows:-
Services 1/57A will run via the A1147 & a loop via Melrose Terrace to serve the stops at the Clayton Arms.
Service X21 will remain on the A1147 and then via St John's Road to serve the stops at the Clayton Arms.
Service 434 will run via the A1147 & a loop of Melrose Terrace before terminating at the Clayton Arms.
Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout, although some short diversions will be required where works are taking place. All businesses on Ravensworth Street/ Station Street will be open as usual and we will install ‘access only’ and ‘businesses open as usual’ signs accordingly.
Following the completion of the drainage work on Ravensworth Street/ Station Street, a further phase of works will start, including completion of the drainage works, road resurfacing, and white lining on Barrington Road. This will involve closing Barrington Road between Station Street and West View/ Park Terrace (illustrated on the below map in red).
During the road closure, a diversion route for vehicles will be clearly signposted. This work is anticipated to take 20 days to complete.
Please note that the scope and duration of these highway works may change at short notice and can be impacted by the location and condition of any buried services encountered.
To stay updated on the latest information, please check the project website (https://www.northumberlandline.uk/news) regularly as we will communicate any late notice changes to the works there.

What to expect during the works
The teams will be on site 24 hours a day and during this work there is potential for noise and vibration, and delays to your journey. We will aim to keep disruption as minimal as practically possible and within the terms agreed with the local planning authority. We have continuous noise monitoring equipment installed onsite to capture in real-time the noise levels being generated as well as handheld noise monitoring equipment to record noise levels per shift.
