The level crossing at Newsham will have some overnight closures so that the railway tracks south of Newsham can be upgraded, between Newsham Level Crossing and the northern end of Hartley Curve (see image below). These works will take place during overnight shifts between 7pm and 7am the next day on weekdays across three weeks, starting on Monday 8 April.
The first shifts will begin at 7pm on Monday 8 April, and end at 7am on Friday 12 April. The works will resume from 7pm on Monday 15 April, and end at 7am on Friday 19 April. The final shifts for this work will be from 7pm on Wednesday 1 May, ending at 7am on Friday 3 May.
The works will require the complete closure of Newsham Level Crossing to vehicles and pedestrians during the times stated above to enable the safe movement of materials from the road to the tracks. A diversion route will be clearly signposted and a shuttle bus will be provided for pedestrians. A summary of all the upcoming traffic management in this location is provided below.
The works will require the use of machinery including a mechanical excavator and power tools, and will result in increased contractor and vehicle activity on the site. This may cause additional disruption including noise, vibration and dust. Engineering trains will also be used during these works and these need to sound their horns when moving near workers to help ensure safety. To limit noise during the works, where possible equipment will be turned off when not in use, and battery operated machinery will be used. However, although these measures may limit noise, they will not remove it.
We understand that working near homes overnight is far from ideal and we are sorry in advance for any disruption these essential works may cause.
Traffic Management
Temporary traffic management, in the form of two-way traffic lights to control traffic over the level crossing, and some full road and footway closures, will be in place during these works. This is essential to protect public and staff as there will be a requirement for engineering train and large equipment movements on the line whilst there is no power to the existing crossing barriers and warning lights during the works. A shuttle bus will be provided to support pedestrians during the full closure periods.
The dates and times of these closures are as below.
